The Big Elkin Creek begins on the escarpment of the Blue Ridge Mountains near Roaring Gap and flows through hillside farms and forests making it's way to Wells Knob, through Northeastern Wilkes and Southwestern Surry counties before rolling through the town of Elkin and meeting the Yadkin River.
