Hurricane Helene devastated much of Western NC in late September 2024, and while Elkin was largely spared, unheeded damage was dealt to the Big Elkin Creek when an idle contracting project was left alone, making this side of the creek an unstable cavity. To make matters worse, a fuel tank leaked causing irreputable damage to important bottomland so close to the confluence with the Yadkin River. The following video shows the damage and the cautionary tale that we face.
